  • The Correctional Officer Program at Sumner College can prepare you to help serve and protect your community in the field of corrections and criminal justice.

  • Court Reporters have a major role in the accurate and timely reporting of current events that shape business, law and politics. A career in Court Reporting can allow for freedom and flexibility to choose the lifestyle you want through the various career options that are available for skilled Court Reporters.
  • Paralegals research and analyze information, draft documents, obtain affidavits, and identify laws while working under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) work directly with patients providing important medical care and act as essential members of a health care team. LPNs can help physicians and registered nurses perform tests and procedures. With experience LPNs may move into managerial positions supervising nursing assistants and aides.

Court Reporting

Court Reporters have a major role in the accurate and timely reporting of events that shape business, law and politics. This is a career field that affects Business, Law, and Politics and makes a huge impact on people’s lives.
Court Reporters use a stenotype machine to create verbatim transcripts of speeches, conversations, legal proceedings and meetings. The role of a court reporter is not only important in judicial proceedings but also in any occasion where the spoken word must be recorded and available as a written transcript. Court Reporters are not limited to working in a court room; they can also be found in law offices, business offices, conventions, legislatures, and even at home working as independent contractors or freelancers.

The Court Reporting Program at Sumner College can help prepare you for the many career opportunities available for skilled Court Reporters: Official Court Reporter, TV Closed Captioner, Educational Reporter, and more. You will receive intensive instruction on the stenotype machine. You will also gain valuable insight into all areas surrounding court reporting, from transcription styles and procedures to court reporter ethics and reporting software.



Online Paralegal Program

Paralegals work closely with lawyers and provide vital assistance to train and case preparation. They are essential members of a legal team. Paralegals work in various legal environments and assist lawyers in many stages of the litigation process, including preparation for trials, hearings, closings and corporate meetings. Paralegals research and analyze information, draft documents, obtain affidavits, and identify laws while working under the supervision of an attorney. Paralegals cannot give legal advice or present cases.

Sumner College offers two Program options: An Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paralegal Studies and a Paralegal Diploma Program. The Diploma Program is designed to be completed in as little as 40 weeks. If your educational goals are set on a degree, Sumner College also offers an AAS in Paralegal Studies. You will study the basic foundation and structure of the American legal system and become proficient with the litigation and legal research process. You will also be prepared to use computer programs as they apply to the practice of law.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paralegal Studies is the only program currently offered online. We know that traditional classroom instruction isn’t always the best fit or may not even be an option for you. Providing the online program option will allow you to work on your own time and study from the convenience of your own home. All of our programs are designed with your busy life in mind, and our goal is to get you started in your new career prepared and as quick as possible; saving you time and money.

Practical Nursing

Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a rewarding and challenging career path ideal for individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy working with people and are interested in a career that contributes to the comfort and well-being of others. LPNs work directly with patients providing important medical care and act as essential members of a health care team. Successful LPNs are able to multi-task and enjoy doing a wide variety of different tasks in a given day.

You can gain the necessary skills and knowledge to handle a variety of responsibilities as a Practical Nurse in settings such as: hospitals, health clinics, doctors’ offices, and assisted living facilities. Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, students are eligible to apply to the Oregon State Board of Nursing to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). You must be licensed to practice in the state of Oregon. Each state has its own licensing requirements that must be met.
